Can’t Stop Smoking – Try Electronic Cigarettes

I’m having great fun with electronic cigarettes, I feel healthier and think that I’m saving money, but am I living in cloud cuckoo land? We shall see.

Electronic cigarettes are healthier than smoking tobacco, can help you to stop smoking, they save you money. Claims made by e-cigarette companies and users but are they true or false?

Smoking Facts

I found out that normal cigarettes contain over 4,000 chemicals and to my horror approximately 40 that are cancerous and that is a proven fact.

Electric cigarettes contain Nicotine, Propylene Glycol, Water and Flavourings – a bit less than 4,000 chemicals don’t you think!!

I’m already addicted to nicotine so I can’t see that e cigs are more harmful in that respect. Propylene glycol is used to deliver vapourised nicotine and according to Wikipedia is used amongst other things as a moisturiser in medicines, cosmetics, food, toothpaste, mouth wash, and tobacco products. If propylene glycol is so widely used in those other products then it shouldn’t be harmful. Water shouldn’t hurt anybody and flavourings – most of our food contains flavourings.

Looking at those facts and unless electronic cigarettes contain substances that we don’t know about then I can’t see them being anywhere near as harmful as tobacco products. I’m no doctor or scientist, but having scoured the Internet the objections to e cigarettes don’t seem to be about what they contain, more that they are addictive and that young non smokers may turn to them because of different flavours available including chocolate and cherry.

I can see that point and really can’t see why flavours beyond the normal were introduced, except for profit of course.

Giving Up Smoking

I’ve tried many times and in different ways, the most successful was with nicotine patches but obviously as with over 80% who try to stop smoking with patches or gum they didn’t provide a permanent cessation of my nicotine addiction. Whether electronic cigarettes help me to stop permanently or not I don’t know and won’t for at least another year or two.

What I do know is that with patches you have a constant flow of nicotine into your body, some brands even recommend that you use them 24/7. I never smoked 24/7 and was never comfortable that nicotine was being constantly released into my body. With e cigarettes I have more control over my intake and like patches can gradually reduce the nicotine strength until I am smoking no nicotine vapour.

Healthy Or Not

Do I think that electronic cigarettes are healthier? Absolutely, I feel better in myself and although I’ve only been smoking e ciggies for a couple of weeks even after a short time I have noticed a difference in my breathing. I walk up a long steep hill every day – usually slowly and out of breath. Not now, I walk up there quicker and my breathing is easier.

I lay on my back and slept last night for the first time in years. Usually I lay on my side because the strange noises that my chest was making when I laid on my back not only kept me awake but also was frightening.

I stopped waking up coughing a few days ago.

Money Saving

There are claims of saving 80% of the cost of smoking normal cigarettes. I don’t think that’s strictly true. The initial outlay for a starter kit generally containing an atomiser, 2 batteries, charger and 5 or 6 cartridges can vary from about £20 to £100. Some companies claim that 1 nicotine cartridge is equivalent to 20 cigarettes – others say 6. I am finding that the brand I am using is probably about 10 cigarettes per cartridge.

An additional cost that isn’t mentioned on some of the sites selling e-cigs is that atomisers need changing fairly regularly and that you should have a spare one. Even so I estimate the saving that I am making to be at least 50% in money and perhaps far more in health.

I am not a law breaker, but if my government ban e cigarettes as some countries have I would have to strongly consider breaking the law rather than risk of going back to tobacco and certain deteriorating health.

The Effects Of Smoking And How You Can Stop Smoking

Smoking is a habit that became highly popular in the 1920’s and most people had no idea how bad it was for their health. Through modern technology and researching various “modern” illnesses and diseases, it has now been established that smoking is very bad for your health and that it is also addictive. The nicotine inside cigarettes is a highly addictive substance that is basically a drug, and can also cause many health problems. This substance is found in tobacco leaves which belong to the nightshade species of plant. It has similar pharmacological properties of addiction as that of heroin and cocaine and is, according to the American Heart Association, one of the most difficult addictions to break. If you value your life and want to become healthy again, live for longer, and prevent nasty illnesses and life threatening diseases, then you need to stop smoking. When first isolated and analyzed by German chemists in 1828, they classified it as a poison, which just goes to show how dangerous it really is.

Dangers of Smoking

On average it takes nicotine about 7 seconds to reach the brain once inhaled, as it is absorbed very quickly in the human body. The half life in the human body is about 2 hours, but this all depends on various factors including how high the dose was, how much was inhaled, how many cigarettes were smoked, or if tobacco was chewed. Usually the chewing tobacco or snuff that is held in the mouth is of a much higher potency than cigarettes.

Smoking is highly dangerous on many levels. First of all it is synthesized in the liver and this causes a lot of strain to the organ, especially if you are a heavy smoker. The blood brain barrier is quickly crossed when you smoke which means that it affects the babies of women that are pregnant if they light up. Similarly, people who are even around a smoker are affected by secondary smoke, because even though the nicotine is burned off, the smoke still contains enough of the chemical in its vaporous form. The drug causes various neurotransmitters in the central nervous system and the brain to function at higher levels, which causes the relaxation effect that gets so many people addicted, and through the stimulation of certain of these receptors adrenaline through an influx of calcium which it binds to is released into the blood stream which causes high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and a rise in blood glucose levels.

Tips for Quitting the Habit

If you want to stop your high blood pressure and high glucose levels before it is too late and you end up suffering from a heart attack or stroke, as well as develop diabetes and more, then you need to stop smoking. Aside from the illnesses that you can develop, smoking has also been linked to various cancers, and other diseases. To stop smoking you must first of all have the willpower and the desire. Once you want to stop, it becomes a whole lot easier. Many people use patches to quit, and some go under hypnotherapy, whilst others just go cold turkey. The best method of quitting will be dependent on the extent of your habit, but if you really want to get healthy, you should try any or all of them.

10 Ways to Speed Up Your Metabolism and Lose Weight Fast

training@homeA healthy metabolism is the key essential to losing weight and keeping weight off. However, many people have slow metabolisms because of their lifestyles.

Everything you put in your body affects your mood, weight, health and state of mind. Want to feel slow, sluggish, and overweight? Then fill your diet with sugar, alcohol and processed food. Want to feel vibrant, thin, motivated and energetic? Then make sure your diet consists of natural, organic, whole foods.

Everything you put in your body affects your metabolism. We must burn more than we eat in order to lose weight so choosing the right foods and supplements to put into our bodies is the key to successful long-term weight-loss.

Here are ten ways to speed up your metabolism:

1. Eat an organic grapefruit for breakfast. Grapefruits help to detoxify your liver, and the enzymes help you burn more fat. The chemical properties in grapefruits reduce insulin levels, which promotes weight loss and increases metabolism.

2. Replace 1 meal a day with your favorite soup. Soup acts as a natural appetite suppressant because it is made up of a combination of liquids and solids which tricks your body into feeling fuller. Make sure your soup is organic and rich in nutrient-packed vegetables.

3. Spice it Up. Adding cayenne pepper to your meals aids in digestion, speeds up your metabolism, and suppresses your appetite. This herb is not only beneficial for the entire digestive system, but also for the heart and circulatory system.

4. Snack on some oatmeal. Oatmeal is an excellent source cholesterol-fighting, fat-soluble fiber. This fiber binds with the food in your colon and helps flush out toxins fast. Make sure to get all the benefits of by eating only organic unprocessed oatmeal.

5. Practice Yoga. Not only do you eliminate toxins through the various poses, but since yoga lowers levels of stress hormones and increases insulin sensitivity, your body can then go into fat-burning mode and burn food as fuel rather than store it as fat.

6. Add Acai to your diet. Acai berries have powerful anti-aging and weight-loss properties and are considered a must-have “superfood.” The acai berry encourages a healthy metabolism which will then in turn help you burn more calories throughout your day.

7. Eat Fiber-Rich foods and take fiber supplements. Eating fiber reduces the total amount of calories we consume in a day. Our bodies do not use energy, or calories, from fiber and makes us feel fuller faster. High-fiber foods take longer to eat and the longer you chew, the less you eat.

8. Do a juice fast. The juice fast essentially means you drink juice throughout the day, every day. Your juice MUST be fresh and organic. This can be done for 3 days, 10 days or 30 days. It depends on your level of discipline, your size and your weight loss and health goals. If you have never done a juice fast before then you will start seeing results right away.

9. Eat organic fruits and vegetables. Conventional fruits and vegetables are full of chemicals that harm your body. Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers. The sooner you stop polluting your body, the sooner you will start to lose weight.

10. Drink at least 2 cups of Green Tea per day. Green Tea reduces Your Appetite so you eat less throughout the day. It also helps to regulates blood sugar which leads to decreased fat storage in the body. And it gives you a better energy jolt than coffee without the crash later!

Giving Up Smoking Preparation

AllenCarrsbookMost people fail at giving up smoking many times before they eventually stop. Fact is that nicotine addiction is harder to beat than cocaine or heroin addictions. Frightening isn’t it that tobacco companies can legally manufacture and sell harmful addictive products whilst less addictive substances are illegal.

Stopping smoking is a challenge and as with any challenge in life you’ve got to give yourself the best shot at not failing. I think that mindset plays a large part in whether you are going to succeed or not.

Some people suddenly decide that they are going to stop there and then and they do. Others set a date for their big quit smoking day, or think about it for a while and prepare themselves. The 2 most popular new years resolutions are either to stop smoking or lose weight and most of us break our resolutions so it’s no wonder there are so many of us still smoking. Every week Monday is the set day for many people to start dieting or stop smoking, that only really works if you have prepared yourself.

Preparation can make a big difference in helping you to control your withdrawel symptoms and temptations in the early days of your attempt. First of all you should make a list of why you want to stop smoking, study that list and you will see that you have a lot of good reasons for quitting. Tell yourself that yes you can end your addiction, that you are in control of your life and not the tobacco companies.

Stopping smoking is a life changing experience and to succeed you need to be ready for your change in life style. It’s a good idea to remove all traces of smoking from your home. Banish lighters and ash trays to the darkest corners of your cupboards and drawers if you cannot bring yourself to throw them away. Throw the last of your cigarettes out during the evening before you quit. I know that some people manage to keep a pack of cigs and still stop but to me that is unnecessary torture and increases the chances of you starting again.

Ideally you shouldn’t smoke inside your home for a while before your big stop day. Let the horrible smell dissipate and the fresh air in. Make your home a no smoking zone before and after stopping.

Ask your friends and family for help. Ask the non smokers not to lecture you and tell you that you had better not start again – that is like a red rag to a bull to me. Ask the smokers not to smoke in your home and to never offer you a cigarette. Smokers offering those who are trying to quit cigarettes is one of the main reasons for starting again.

Unless you are very brave and going cold turkey make sure that you have your stop smoking aids ready. Those aids could be one or a mixture of:

Nicotine Patches

Nicotine Gum

Inhalator

Self-Hypnotism DVD/ Video/ Audio/ mp3

Motivational Courses

Books/ Ebooks

Electronic Cigarettes

Stop Smoking Cash Cans

Laser Therapy

Microtabs

Lozenges

Stop Smoking Diary

You can even set up a blog and or forum to help yourself and others. Mutual encouragement can be a powerful form of motivation to stop and stay stopped.

Lay in a few treats for yourself. Weight gain is often a worry with smoking cessation, but having plenty of low calorie, low fat treats to nibble the cravings away helps.

Finally think about your reasons for giving up smoking regularly and especially if your resolve begins to weaken. Remind yourself just what harm they are doing to your body and your life and tell yourself and the world that yes you can stop smoking.

The Ridicule of the World

humanjourneyThe law is in effect in order to keep and maintain peace among its inhabitants. However you sometimes can’t seem to wonder what on earth was going in the minds of these lawmakers when you see such imposing laws that make no sense what so ever.

One of the common types of mind boggling laws are ones that contradict each other. In many states across the United States, it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon when drunk which is completely understandable considering that it has been proven that alcohol can impair a person’s judgment. However in the state of Tennessee, the state legislatures believed that the 2nd amendment is more important than the safety of its citizens. By overturning the decision of the Governor, the state legislatures have decided to make it legal to its citizens that it is fine for people to bring in a concealed weapon into a bar. Now it may be just me, but I’m pretty sure that this is a recipe for a disaster just waiting to happen. I guess they never heard of Murphy’s Law before.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090605/ap_on_re_us/us_xgr_guns_in_bars

Another type of law that is completely ridiculous are the ones that are still written in the books before the civil movements and women’s suffrage. One such example is a law in Minnesota that states that Dakota Indians are banished from within the state lines. Luckily, the people who enforce this law completely ignore it (or shall we hope they do) because if they didn’t the press would have a field day as well as our government’s legal system getting involved which would end up wasting a lot of time and money for something that is so obvious. On the defense of the lawmakers in Minnesota, they are trying to remove this obscene law from its records, but it’s still a wonder why such a law wasn’t removed sooner. And this doesn’t isolate to just one state. There are similar laws all across the United States that are just as well ridiculous to have still exist.

http://www.startribune.com/politics/state/45057142.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUsT

By now you should have heard of Engrish before and if not it is basically people of other nations trying to use English in their slogans or signs but have completely failed to pass basic spelling and grammar. Well, before you start ridiculing them we should start by fixing our own mistakes first. Even though our nation’s official language is English, a vast number of our citizens are not well educated in the English language.  Case in point are those innocent signs that are posted all across our nation. A common types of these is a sign that informs a pet owner, usually dog owners, that a pet can only be taken into public if it is leashed. However with wording such as “No dog shall be in a public place without its master on a leash” it makes you wonder just who wrote this.

There are thousands and thousands of laws just like the ones I have mentioned in this article. Each and every one of these types of laws can tell you why our nation is ridiculed by others and how they see us as a “sue-happy” country. I mean, our citizens have sued each other for the most ridiculous claims that has made us the ridicule of the world.

Excuses For Not Giving Up Smoking

511px-English_No_Smoking_signBeing on my umpteenth attempt at giving up smoking I decided to look back at the excuses I and those around me gave for not stopping smoking, or starting again after quitting. When I say excuses they are usually given as reasons when really they are excuses.

Stopping smoking makes me put on weight

Absolute BS. Nobody has ever put on weight simply because they have stopped smoking. How do I know that? Because I’ve been there. Sometimes I have put weight on, sometimes I haven’t but each time has been different. What happens is that you automatically try to substitute the craving for nicotine with something tasty like chocolate or boiled sweets and that is what puts weight on you.

If you need substitutes try low fat, low calorie substitutes like grapes, oranges, Tic Tacs or carrots. If you really can’t manage without chocolate or boiled sweets use the money that you are saving on cigarettes to pay for membership at a gym and work the calories off. Or get yourself a Wii Fit like I have! Whatever you do exercise will help to keep the weight off and to make you healthier. The bottom line is that tobacco products are more likely to kill you than a few pounds weight gain so forget vanity right now.

My husband/wife/partner smokes

OK it’s a tough one when somebody that you live with continues to smoke when you are trying to quit. It’s far easier if they don’t smoke or if they decide to stop with you, but if they care about you they should be happy to help you. One way that they can help is to go outside to smoke and keep your home smoke free.

Apart from keeping temptation out of your way, if you have children they shouldn’t be smoking in the home anyway for the sake of the children’s health. Smoking outside also keeps your home cleaner, less smelly, doesn’t need decorating as often and your partner will find that he or she smokes less and saves some money too because they haven’t got the convenience of just being able to light up where ever they are.

In fact banning smoking from the home, or just having one room where you can smoke can help you to cut back on smoking and lead up to stopping.

My grandparents smoked and they lived until they were in their 90s

Your grandparents aren’t you and statistically they were darned lucky to live so long as smokers. Truth be told I used to say the same about one of my grandmas, conveniently forgetting that this shriveled up relative of mine who always seemed to have a Capstain full strength dangling from her lips could rarely get a sentence out without coughing. In fact that image of her in my head is my only memory of her and that’s sad.

I’m going to stop smoking on Monday not today

Monday comes and goes and you have either forgotten your promise or you decide that you will wait until the following Monday. Or you might even manage an hour or two without a cig before you change your mind.

I can stop anytime

Thats what some smokers say but when challenged they will say that they don’t want to yet, or that they will stop after Christmas, the new year, their holiday, sometime never. Truth is the desire to quit needs to be stronger than your addiction and that is when you will stop and not just any time.

I’m waiting until after the summer because everybody is getting duty frees for me and I’m saving money

You would save even more if you quit altogether!

I smoke roll ups/ a pipe and they are not as bad for you

They are still killers no matter how you smoke tobacco.

I get too stressed and that’s bad for me

That isn’t stress it’s the nicotine addiction and craving. There are lots of products on the market today to help reduce the craving and withdrawal symptoms: nicotine gum, nicotine patches, inhalators, books, hypnotism, subconscious learning cds, tablets, fake cigarettes and even a Wii game to help you to stop smoking.

I’m sure there are many more excuses for not stopping smoking, but there are far more good reasons for giving up smoking and the main one is your health and the health of everybody around you.

Britains Got Talent Final Week

1181642438m9159l1I was intending to write about the auditions weekly, but after the first week I found the rest of the auditions mainly disappointing. It was as if the fireworks that started the series off fizzled out. So I’m going to summarise the final week and make my predictions for the final.

Some acts were dire, such as the guy breaking wind and the fool hanging things from his ears, some stood out for me and they included dance groups Flawless and Diversity, the singer Susan Boyle and Saxophonist Julian Smith. Now we are at the end of the semi final week and the voting went mostly as I expected. The biggest drama was young Hollie Steel breaking down in tears on the stage, but she was given a second chance and came back and wowed everybody while winning herself a place in the final.

Apart from the saxophonist the finalists are all dance or singing acts, variety lost on the way to more popular forms of entertainment. Except for one act I think that the final will be spectacular. The line up is:

Aiden Davis – Dancer
Diversity – Street Dancers
Flawless – Street Dancers
Hollie Steel – Singer
Julian Smith – Saxophonist
Shaheen Jafargholi – Singer
Shaun Smith – Singer
Stavros Flatly – Comedy Dancers
Susan Boyle – Singer
Two Grand – Singers

Although Susan Boyle has been the favourite from week one and there has been a lot of publicity surrounding her I don’t necessarily think that she will win. She has an amazing voice but if I’m going to make any predictions I would base them on who I prefer and who I would pay to see. My top 3 are:

1. Flawless – Street Dancers
2. Diversity – Street Dancers
3. Julian Smith – Saxophonist

The one to watch out for in the future Shaun Smith – Singer
Funniest act of 2009 Stavros Flatly – Comedy Dancers

Yes I’ve totally missed out the youngsters and Susan Boyle. Good though they were they just weren’t my cup of tea.

Update – 2 out of 3 aint bad

What an amazing final, the best one so far. I enjoyed every minute of the show. There were so many memorable performances that until the winners Diversity appeared there were several acts who could have won. I put Diversity in second place behind Flawless before the final, and until then they were. Then they put together an astonishing routine and blew the rest of the competition out of the water.

Flawless were great, but when it came down to it Diversity were better on the night. I’m glad that it was one of the street dancing acts that won and that there are 11 happy winners rather than just one.

At least I got third place right. I’ve always had a soft spot for the saxophone and Julian Smith played it magnificently sending shivers down my spine. What a cool guy and what a great talent.

My fourth favourite was Shaun Smith. This guy has one of those voices that I could listen to all night. I said previously that he is the one to watch out for and I think that even more after his final performance. He is only 17, can sing really well and has the looks too. If he doesn’t get a record contract I will be very surprised.

I wonder what 2010 will bring along!

Electric Cigarettes

electric cigarettesI’ve tried to stop smoking many times over the years and failed dismally. Thing is I enjoy smoking even though I know that it’s bad for my health. I don’t like smelling like an ashtray or having a smokers cough. Nor do I like feeling like a leper in todays society just because I smoke.

So I had to admit to myself that it was time for me to sort myself out and do something about stopping. Having so many failed attempts behind me I knew that it was time to try something different – if you are thinking ‘willpower’ forget it. I haven’t got enough of that and why should I put myself and those around me through the torture of withdrawel symptoms when you don’t need to.

I’ve read a few articles over recent months about electronic cigarettes and became interested enough to search out genuine reviews and comments on forums.  You will find a lot of false reviews on the internet from people selling a product, you can usually tell that they have probably never seen the product never mind tried it. Forums are good to get genuine feedback and opinions so that’s where I always look.

The feedback about electronic cigarettes is pretty good out there, though there do seem to be some issues from anti smoking groups. They reckon that e cigs are just as addictive as tobacco products and maybe they are, but they are still healthier.

With e cigarettes you get nicotine cartridges without the tar and harmful chemicals that you get in normal cigarettes. An atomiser and a battery. Put them all together and you get a cigarette like those in the picture above.

I’m pretty pleased with them so far. I have stopped smoking tobacco and I don’t have the withdrawel symptoms that I’ve had with previous stop smoking attempts. My aim is to wean myself off the addiction by gradually lowering the strength of the cartridges at a comfortable pace.

It’s the same principal as nicotine patches but I control how often I introduce the nicotine to my body and how much. With patches you are introducing nicotine all of the time. Some brands tell you to leave them on for 24 hours. I just wouldn’t do that, I don’t smoke 24/7. I once forgot to take a patch off when I went to bed and I felt lousy the next morning, my mouth was very dry and I was coughing a lot.

It’s True, Spider-Man Will Soon be on Broadway

Sometimes you read something on the internet and even though it’s posted on several “reputable” sites, by several different writers, you still don’t believe it’s true.

A month ago I experienced this phenomenon when I read that Sean Penn was cast in the new Three Stooges movie. I experienced it again in regards to the new Spider-man musical that’s heading to Broadway.

Surprisingly, I completely believe Spider-man would provide fodder for the musical stage. Like Hollywood, Broadway’s profit margins are so thin they can’t take many chances on new material. They have to use well-known source material in order to secure the financial backing necessary to produce a Broadway show.

Of course, I might have chosen a Disney movie or gone the route of a cheesy jukebox musical instead of having everyone’s favorite web slinger croon and prance around on stage.

Spider-man is probably the most sarcastic superhero around and musical theater is the one medium that eschews sarcasm. After all, it’s hard to be acerbic when you’re expressing your feelings in song.

What shocked me about “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark,” a musical directed by Julie Taymor, is the show’s composer. It’s none other than Messrs. Bono and Edge.

Taymor and Bono worked together on her Beatles musical, “Across the Universe.” For the project Bono covered two Beatles’ classics, “I Am the Walrus” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

Still, Taymor must have some incriminating pictures of the U2 duo, or maybe she’s has pull with the Malibu city council and can help the Edge build those houses. Either way, this project seems an odd undertaking for the coolest-half of the coolest rock band in the world.

Nationwide casting calls are currently underway although rumors had Rachel Evan Wood slated to play Mary Jane. However, Taymor dismissed the speculation stating she wants to go with unknown actors.

The casting process began April 9th in Orlando and ends May 27th in Austin, Texas. When it’s all said and done, casting directors will have visited six U.S. cities.

What are they looking for besides someone that tingles their Spidey senses? Well they’re looking for “performers with dynamic rock/pop voices including those with experience in bands and as solo performers.” Fortunately, that leaves out Tobey Maguire.

The musical, which begins previews in 2010 (but of course Spiderman tickets go on sale this June), caused a bit of stir on the internet over the announcement that it included a “lead female villain.”

It makes sense, Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, Venom, Carnage, Electro, the Sandman, the Vulture, the Hobgoblin and Sam Raimi would be too hard to recreate for the stage.

The casting call described the show’s villain as “Sinead O’Connor with a Middle Eastern/Bulgarian/Greek twist.” You have to love the way entertainment types mix and match characteristics; I have no idea what they are talking about.

Some speculated that the unnamed villainess is Dr. Victoria Von Doom while others claimed it’s Black Cat. Another thinks it’s Hillary Clinton. According to several sources the new bad girl, created specifically for the show, is Swiss Miss (the name doesn’t fit the description though).

The nerds at Aint It Cool News had an interesting post claiming the villainess is a new character called Arachne. She’s your typical time traveling beauty that turned herself into a “spider for her hubris.”

Who knows, you can’t believe everything you read on the internet.
